Vietnam: The Next Generation

A film by Sandy Northrop

Thirty years ago the only future that awaited young Vietnamese was war. Today Vietnam's first post-war generation is coming of age and its members--most in their twenties-- are seizing opportunities unimaginable in their parents' time. How has this new generation capitalized on the dividends of peace?

This film profiles young Vietnamese: students, farmers, soldiers, engineers and entrepreneurs. Because of them, communism is losing its relevancy, the doors of a free-market economy are opening and memories of the "American" war are being relegated to the distant past.

This ambitious generation represents sixty percent of Vietnam's population. Some start on a second college degree before they have completed the first. Others finish their day jobs and head off for night school to study English. They flood into the cities and the money they send back to their villages keeps millions of families from poverty. Despite their impatience for economic change, this generation is tradition-bound, with family and community still the unshakeable foundation of society. This is an important resource for understanding Vietnam today, as well as understanding the process of recovering from a devastating war.
