My First Bra

for more films on Women

A film by Margaret Babbott and Julie Akeret

Women and girls will smile over this engaging film on a memorable female rite of passage buying the first bra. Six mother-daughter pairs reminisce about this underappreciated but hugely complex milestone. We hear from girls and women ages 8 to 60 whose stories reveal the influence of peers, the anxiety over different physical maturation rates, and the importance of the mother-daughter bond. This could be used as a wonderful shame-free resource for schools, youth programs, psychology and parenting classes.

"This is a good way to get girls to talk with peers in girls' health or gym classes, or with their moms in mother-daughter events about a subject that would be awkward for them. The film could be used in parenting classes or PTA events as well." School Library Journal Asylum Vermont International Film Festival, 2004

"...would serve as an excellent icebreaker or discussion starter piece in mother/daughter groups. It would also serve well in classes for parents and people who work with teens and pre-teens. Recommended" Adrienne Furness, Webster Public Library Webster, NY for EMRO
